reverse manaul body 727- throwing oil out the breather

Post by andyrob »

can any one help, my 69 roadrunner has a reverse manual body 727 with high stall converter & gearvendors overdrive, it throws oil out of the breather.
i have tried:
changing oil filter ( the old one did have some little bits of alloy on it)
removing oil cooler & lines & checking them for blockages
running the g/box a bit underfilled ie on min

What about a blocked air vent in the back of the bellhousing?

Is the fluid aerated?

Are you completely sure the oil can flow freely out of the trans, through the cooler, and back into the trans? It does not need to be completely blocked. A restriction will do it.

hi ducan, yes I thought oil was coming out the dipstick tube, but close inspection found an extented breather tube was pumping oil onto the dipstick tube

hi dave maybe I should try bypassing out the oil cooler, but it seems to be clear & the cooler & lines look almost new
the fluid on the bottom of the old filter did have air in it, but the other 99.9 % that drained out looked fine
how do you check for the air vent at back of bellhousing

cheers

Eh?? :? A breather tube from where??

The air vent is behind the torque converter. It means dropping the trans.

Top of gearbox is a smooth casting,no holes or bolts. The only breather is the vent by the pump housing behind the converter. :?

Bring an axle stand as well. I don't get under a car without one.

Sound advice, Dave! I wince when I see blokes under cars with out one. There was a geezer killed up the road from my School when a Mini fell on him when the jack seals went. And didn't that dishy fella in Neighbours die like that? :?

Years back in Crawley a geezer tried to cut the brake pipes on his neighbours Austin Princess. Shame he cut the hydrolastic pipes, last thing he ever did. :)

I've seen the breather in the front pump plugged and a new breather drilled into the top of the extension housing with a hose or line running along the top of the box and up the bulkhead, I assume that's the sort of thing you've got. This mod I believe, is intended for transbrake cars where the fluid gets very hot, the level rises causing a leak at the stock vent in the pump. it's just a way of raising the point at which the box vents to atmoshere to avoid that leak. The case of the box is not under pressure so I can't see what would cause oil to squirt out of the breather if the level is correct and the box is not getting hot. If it is breathing into the dipstick tube (which is sealed) I could see that would cause a pressure build up.
