Gear Selection

As you know i've been having problems with the shifter on my Charger 4 speed manual, one minute it will select all gears then when you go back in neutral and try to select a gear it won't select the gears? I originally thought it was the shifter because the old rods were in pretty bad shape and it still could be the problem but then why does it select gears sometimes and not others? I've ordered a Hurst Shifter so that can only help but could it be the clutch sticking because of it sitting damp for a few weeks and not being driven? Any ideas or solutions? Thanks For Any Help
