How can you check a suregrip on the bench? is it possible to check the wear?? can the cone style be repaired??? I understand the clutch style is preferable to the cone style

I read somewhere about securing one side then getting a big lever on the other and checking how much torque was needed to turn it. There must be some specs somewhere. The cone type can be rebuilt but is a PITA to do.

Yeah I think it was 100ft/lb to overcome the grip mechanism.

As Kev said the cone type can be repaired but it's a bit more hassle than the clutch type. Not that difficult though, involves shimming the cones back to their required position to make up for the wear. Officially they cannot be rebuilt, but many people have successfully done it.

But the clutch is just a better type IMHO - it functions better than the cone. But to be honest, most people don't care which they have.

There y'go Richard - something I knocked up earlier!
Very easy to tell.
If yours is from a '70 then I think it's probably a 489, in which case should be a cone. However, as always with Mopar, only way to be sure is to check. If it's in the car, then you'll have to go on the casting #.

Hi Guys,
Yes you can repair a cone type, it involves stripping out the diff unit and undoing either 8 or 10 bolts holding the two halves together and carefully (springs) seeing wether the cones have bottomed on the case,if so you can machine approx 80 thou off the end of the cone and rebuild using more spider gear thrust washers to make up the play in the spider gears. For a more in depth article, look at mopar muscle `Rebuilding 8.75" sure grip`
Its pretty easy to do, The only hard bit is the machining.(I`m lucky I have a lathe and assocciated machine tools at home) If I can do it anyone can. Hope this helps.
