360 heads

Post by Anonymous »

ive just bought a 360 motor out of a 84 dodge ram,is it possible to fit a 318 sump as the 360 sump will not clear the crossmember in my duster, also i thought 360 heads had bigger ports than a 318 the exhaust ports on this 360 look the same size?

Mick, off the top of my head........

318 sump won't fit because the 318/340 crank journals are smaller, 360's have different size at the end of the pan.
360 oil pans come in car and truck types, sump is in different position (centre and end I think).

So - you need a 360 car sump. Still available :) , fairly cheap :), in the US :(

Don't know if that all applies to the Magnums as opposed to the LA's, but I think so. As for heads, again not up on later heads but they were different animals, high swirl, closed chamber, but I also thought the 360's were still larger.

What's the head casting #, and is the motor an LA or a Magnum? Can't remember when they switched.

Mick , sump wont fit , the 360 has a larger rear main bearing cap .
the heads on the 360 should have 1.88" inlet and 1.6" exhaust valves , the 318 will only have 1.78" & 1.5" , unless it was a police spec 318 , casting number 4323345 ,. if you have casting numbers i can let you know what you have.

Mick. i'm in the same position fitting a 360 to my Dart. Mopar performance do a sump kit inc pickup for our cars -cost $125 from Mancini racing. Best check with them first for your application

trev the 318 is a 73 motor, the valves look bigger on the 360 looking down the ports ,but its the ports i thought were bigger on the 360 aswell as the valves, ive tried my old 318 cast manifolds up against the 360 heads and the exhaust ports, dont match ,if anything they look smaller

have your 360 heads got small holes located under the exhaust ports , these are the emisions holes , if so the ports will be smaller than a non emisions head .

Mick, its a little difficult to know yet. I got a set of mounts with the 360 but, i'm not sure what K member ive got as it was a 6 pot and now sports a318!
I'm told that at least one mount has to be changed. If all else fails there are ready made adaptor brackets from the USA. I'm not doing my swap until after new year so i cant be exact about specifics yet.

Mick, ive just compared port sizes off my (smog) 360 heads with an original 340 hi-po (1968)exhaust manifold.
The 340 ports are bigger (45 x 32 mm) 360 ex ports are 40 x 25mm.
However, from what i've read its the bigger valves and inlet ports that are significant on these heads. I have some build up spec on 360 motors, i'll try to post it shortly.
