69 or 70 Charger, how to tell??

Post by MattH »

Silly question maybe.
I have photos of a Charger shell, most likely a 69, which I need to help the owner confirm the year of, to get an age related plate. The car has no ID at all on it, so I have to go with the body style only to get it registered.
It can only be 69 or 70 due to the rear lights and marker lights, but looking at different cars, it appears 70s had two styles of lights.
Looking at pics on here, Duncs bargain has a full width type, Adrians repainted Lee has 2 seperate, Cliveys looks like the panel has a divider in the middle when the lights are off the car. My reference books and even the interchange manual don't give me a definite answer at the moment.
Is there any difference between the sheet metal and lights of a 69 and a 70? The shell looks very original, not messed with, so it hasnt had new panels, but I need to be sure before telling DVLA what is what.
I am ignoring the bits of metal that can be unbolted, doors, fenders etc to make the application watertight.
Any help much appreciated.

hi Matt, look at the side marker lamp holes on the rear quarters . the 70's had a longer rectangle because of the bulb Holder on one end ,
can you post any pictures of it .

if it has got no identifying 70 front end sheet metal , here is the 70 marker lamp i mentioned above . also there is a extra hole by the block connector on the fire wall , ( new routing of the amp gauge wire , for 1970) also can you seen any numbers on the top of the radiator support & stamped under the trunk rail weather strip on the drivers side , if so what are they :read2:

If its a 70 it will have a rectangle reflector in the cluster unique to 70, 69 lights dont have it.

Here is a rear and side view , plus the rear marker light from inside. I cant see any obvious wiring connector to the light, were they just a reflector on 69's ?

:iagree: 69 :D yes Matt Chrysler found a loop hole in the law for the 69 model year . that stated that all cars had to have amber front & red rear , - side marker lights . so they got away with reflectors . witch made production a bit cheaper. i guess they were up for any cost cutting

Hi Charger Dude.

Have both the numbers on the L/H trunk weatherseal rail and Top core support been removed?
It would be strange for both to be gone!

Looking good for a General, but a Daytona clone wolud be Awesome!!!

Best of luck Baccman.

Yep. Looks like a 69. There should also be a number stamped on the drivers side cowl if it is the same as an E-Body.

This is a 1970 Cuda. Hence the "0".
