How to remove leaf spring hangers?

Post by db »

Any tips folks?
The bolts are seized into the leaf eyes. I can't even get a socket or spanner onto the heads of the front bolts cos the chassis is in the way! The spring hanger plates are rivetted to the chassis... :x
Grinder is coming out to play shortly i think....grrr

Should be bolted on, deep socket usually gets in there...

Thanks for the input folks, on pickups they ARE rivetted! So is the rear X-member which was badly rotted so thats come off aswell.
Anyone got a pair of long-ish shocks for sale? One of mine is shot.
So, last night Mr Grinder came out to play. On the way he called for Mr Lumphammer, Miss Bigchisel and the Crowbar family.
My drive looks like a battlefield now- rivet shrapnel, 1/4" thick rust flakes, hacked-up U-bolts & leaf springs- had to cut off the eyes in situ to get at one of the rivets on each hanger (i could have gone for the other end of the rivets inside the chassis but i'd have had to strip out the exhausts, dodge brake pipes & wiring, and i'd be working inside the 'C' of the chassis rail-yuk)
I have new springs to go on but i'll need to mod them a bit- they're off some Ford pickup and are a bit heavy-duty and a 1/2" wider!
The X-member is beyond repair i reckon so i'll bin it and bolt or weld in a couple of lengths of hefty angle. The chassis rails are rotted through where the spring mounts sit so i'll plate 'em before bolting the mounts back on. Not sure how i'll attach the springs to the axle yet- gonna be a bodge but rest assured an over-engineered bodge! :thumbright:
