Chrome (painting over)

Post by morgan »

All -

Finally got all my lovely chromed items back, and now ready to start on the reassembly. The body of my tail lights have come back with the outer section chromed (as I wanted) and now I need to coat the inner flat areas black.

See the following pic - the pink area shows what I need to make black.

Has anyone done this and can you recommend a product that will etch/bond to the body ?

PS - 2nd pic is just because I am so happy with my restored bits ! :D:D:D Check out the bumpers (dents removed, chrome) and the front valence is just lovel - You wouldnt believe how horrible it was pre this painting...

Wow, now that is an inspiration!

I won't comment on the painting technique just in case someone (like Gavin) has achieved some excellent results actually doing the job!

Morgan, you forgot to draw a pink line round the leading edge of the pods. ;)

I think I did it wrong, but just primed it & painted it, can't remember if it was satin or matt. :? Paint hasn't lifted yet. :o

Cars gonna look a million dollars with that brightwork. :thumbright:

I haven't done a job like that but surely a light scurfing with some 1200 grit would be the order of the day, plus make sure it is chemically clean before spraying. JMTCW (Just My Two Cents Worth for Adam! ;) )

Cheers Adam. Feels like its costing a million dollars... I am now understanding you 'money-pit' reference, and I have done about 10% of what you have ! !

The front valence had to get painted 3 times before they managed to get the shade right... custom mix paint, so I still have no idea what the actual colour is. Looks nice though. Shame about the rest of the bubbly bodywork :)

Started tearing down the seats last night. Fun fun fun...

Well, I might as well put my proper English, non EU tuppence worth in then!

First, I would mask the areas accurately using a good quality masking tape then key the areas to be painted with wire wool or as Kev said, if that doesn't key it, a god quality abrasive like 3M trizact, no coarser than P600.

Then you need to strip of the masking, degrease, re-mask and hit it with an etch primer (you can get pro etch primer in aerosols now) then according to the drying/curing spec give it the once over with the argent/satin black or whatever goes on those posh Charger things! ;)

The other thing I would recommend is to keep an eye on the drying of the final coat and demask, just as it ha gone of and there should be less flaking of the edges.

That's what I did on my Plymouth grille, but that was plastic, so that's the best I can do mate!
