What,s this?

Post by SteveA »

Hi guys,
My temperature gauge is not working and also my fuel gauge registers full off the dial,so I'm guessing the voltage limiter has packed up.
Have got the dach apart and know the three pin plug is the limiter.
There is also something what looks like a condenser out of a distributor, the wire end which connects to middle pin of the limiter.
What is this, and what's it do.Don't have a digital camera to post a pic.
(Car is 69 runner BTW)

I believe it is a radio suppresor.....

If the gas guage reads off the clock, then the wire to the sender is shorted to ground, the VR supplies 5 volts (in theory !) and if it goes down, niether the gas or temp guage will register.

A quick way to test the VR is working is to put an LED between the wire to the sender wire (gas or temp) and ground, if the led switche on and off at a fixed rate then the VR is working, another way is to do the same with a test meter set to volts, depending on the type it will show 5 V or 'pulse' 12 volts on and off.

You can test the temp sender by getting someone to short the sender wire to ground and the guage should lift towards hot, do not let the guage get to the top or you can damage it as they do not like full ground signals.

Thanks Alex.
You're right about temp gauge will be damaged if it gets to top,the needle came completely off.I've just got a replacement from the states so know about that now.
Have also fitted a brand new sender so I know that's not the problem.
I've ordered a VR now,so hopefully this will get it working.
