Re: Speedo
Rest your head on the brake pedal and look up. You will probably see the back of it.mitch wrote:How can i get to the back of the gauge without tacking the whole dash out ??????? MITCH
But to really work on it I am guessing the cluster (or at least part of) has to come out.

Mitch I wasn't trying to be nasty there but the dash and speedo was put together by a man. Not a magician. So you can take it apart in reverse order.
That is what everyone else does. There are people on here with little mechanical knowlege that have removed and restored their dash and instruments.
As you state the speedo actually works and the only problem is the miles don't clock up why worry about it? I bet there is a few people here that wish they had the same problem!
In other words there is no rush to fix this. It it just got MOTed you have a full year to get around to it.

To remove speedo,
1. Lossen bolts and the base of the steering column (5 off)
2. Under the dash, the column is fixed by two nuts, remove these (this may be underneath a plastic trim if fitted) This allows the whole column to be tilted downward slightly.
3. Remove lighting and wiper knobs - unscrew nuts behind
4. Remove 6 self tappers that fix the instrument cluster.
5. Stick your hand up near the pedal mechanism, either withdraw the speedo cable from the speedo or feed it torward to dash - whatever is easier.
The cluster should withdraw
Have done this only twice this weekend

I've had the dash out of my car so many times I've lost count. Last time was when I fitted a new Year One dash pad. While I was doing it a friend of mine who works at Jaguar called round, looked at the old cracked dash pad and said he could get it repaired at work. It looks so good I'll be fitting it next time I have the dash out.
