Ive noticed a bit of play in the manual steering box. Now the play seems to be between the box and the steering wheel-column. Can this play be taking up with any adjustment. Some type of clonking going on there when driving the car.
Ive checked the usual culprits, ball joints, bushes, wheel bearings.Greased up the joints available.
Any good advice is welcome.
Rich.

undo two nuts at the rag joint, one is bigger than the other oposite each other round the jointRichard72 wrote:Thanks Dave.without appearing a total....is it easy to do..whats involved.
Rich,
with tippex mark how the rag joint clamp fits onto the steering box shaft
the nuts to undo are on oposite sides of the rag joint
undo the rag joint clamp on the steering box shaft
pull the column up abit in the car
out comes the rag and possibly the clamp
put other rag kit together
it has two smooth bolts (use a vice or a big set of mole grips)
watch the wire under one of the bolts or nuts.....thats your horn. don't snap it off.
put the clamp back onto the steering box shaft in exactly the same place. changes are it has 1 fat spline to make sure you do (or to drive you mad)
bolt the lot up
rag joint is a sandwich of 4 disks or rubber and 3 disks of cloth all stuck together.
its round has 3/4 inch hole down the middle and 4 m6 ish holes round the perimiter
2 for metal posts and two for odd sized bolts and nuts
the top of the column bolts into 2 holes in it
the bottom bit bolts into the other two
and the rest of the gubbins is to save your life if the rag rips in half
basically isolates the road vibration from the coloumn and your hands

you don't want pnumatic drill operators twitch now do ya...
its a bit akward but you could fit it in after you come back from shopping but before you have ya tea hour to 2 hour job depending on how rusted up it all is

There is another possible reason.
I have noticed it is quite common for the three bolts holding the steering box to the frame to come loose. Allowing the box to twist around sligthly.
Maybe because the bolts have to be torqued quite hard (80lbs I think I remember?) and are tricky to get to sometimes.
Worth checking anyway.
