The £100 quid paintjob:Not for purists!

Post by MilesnMiles »

The combined impact of 37 years of wear, tear, no-care and general aging had left my Dart with an interesting patina of rust, primer and paper thin paint. However much i wanted to decide that it looked sort of 'road movie desert cool' the thing was hangin'!
I dont have the 2-3K for a paint job and if I did i'd put it into going faster so, after reading 50 pages on Moparts on how to paint yer Mope with a roller, I decided to give it a go. It couldnt look worse after all

it cost me a £100 quid in paint and hardware and about a million hours of me rubbing it down by hand. The end resut is from Beater to Top banana or from Beater to Lemon  if you prefer!

Trev D sold me two excellent wings which fitted nicely...you can see the tools of the trade in the foreground. I bet you paint sprayers are just so envious

The finish is great from 20' and neat from 10'. Up close you can se the orange peel effect and some of the rougher aspects of the prep. The good news is that I can keep going back to it and getting it better. in the meantime I was amused at just how many heads it turned whilst out cruising today (after the rain!).
Spotters will note the interesting additional swage line that Mopar never developed on the lower rear quarter courtesy of a bodged, but metal (not filler)repair.
a couple of black Dodge logos for the rear quarter and i'm taking a rest for a week or so :thumbright:

It was automotive paint though wasn't it? Not Dulux or similar? I have seen that before.

Did you thin the paint?

Dave, its rustoleum paint from the USA. A lot of people have painted vw's with it. I thinned it considerably, if i hadn't I couldnt have used it. The guy on Moparts recommended 25%, I ended up with nearly 40% as I painted during the hot (!) Easter break period. Rubbing it back led to sand thru's even after 7 coats, so it is a bit of a labour of love...or something

Don't know Dave. Some of the Vdub crew use boat paints. Apparently, nothing shifts it once its in place.

Its an OK job alright, as Adam says, the car certainly looks better for it, the only draw back is having another yellow & black yank car in Newquay

Cheers chaps, hey Mike, just before the website altered the configuration, your pics cam out ful size, quality stuff. Shame the resizing has dulled the colour a touch!
