1981,I brush painted my Ford Pop with Humbrol. Before they changed the recipe and you still buy it in big tins. Those days that paint would brush on and look like it had been sprayed.

I bought a Yamaha 125 4-stroke that had been painted with Dulux once ... looked like a groovy vein effect after a couple of months so I just laquered over it

Gotta say I'm tempted by the idea of this, I quizzed Scott Billadeau about painting the Daytona on Monday (he does car paint for a living) and because of the '80s clearcoat (peeling/fading, generally terrible) he'd have to get it all off to do the job properly ... for what the car's worth, a tough topcoat might be a viable alternative ...

Thanks for the feedback chaps. But, for those unsure here are some reflective views
1- Body must be prepped as if for spraying. Dont ask me how I know!
2-If above is not noted, expect imperfections, mine has quite a lot.
3- It WILL orange peel, its just how the paint setles and the thining is essential.
4-In between coats sanding stage is essential
5- Mine could, and will be better when i get more paint and flat some areas much better.
6-Like paulo says, its cheap, durable, but don't expect miracles
7-I'm pretty happy with it, but the photos do flatter the car!
Finally, if anyone is seriously interested in havinga go (James?) pm me and i'll refer you to some on line sources or call you.
Gavin, given how much you have put into your car and done it the 'right' way, its nice to get feedback that recognises my 'slacker' version

Believe me, if it were not for all the rust I would have been doing it your way! It led me down a path I had to see through but the best route is a good 'driver', who cares about show trophies, it's about having a nice car you can drive.
And I always love the low buck route!! Needs some invention, thought and graft rather than just opening a wallet. Believe it or not there is no way I could have done my car without that approach, we are closer in spirit than you realise!

Well, I think Miles has done a grand job.

I posted the fact a week or so ago that the industry standard for a complete respray was 80 hours, which at say 40 lids an hour is well over three large and few of us can afford that, unless the car justifies that level of investment (and much more, in many cases).

More power to your elbow my son, it looks a darn sight better than it did before...it had that olive drab.desert camo look, not becoming of a muscle car, unless you're an Australian

Good job, nice one

I once did a Viva HA van with a roller, then left it in the hot sun allday to dry. Only trouble was, the sun wrinkled the paint so I had a unique crinkle finish

The funny thing was, that I painted during the Easter heatwave, at times the paint was drying minutes after i rolled it. Anyway, some more paint arrived today so at some point i'll be adding more where it needs it. Incidentally, Ivor it was your post regarding the real cost of a respray that motivated me to do it myself!

It has to be better than the "professional" paintjob on my Dart, that has at least one example of every single painting defect known to man...

Actually, I knew someone that once made a pair of dummy sidepipes from black plastic guttering...
