Manual shift trans

Post by Anonymous »

Hi,
I know some of you run a manual system on a 727 box, i have got a B&M shifter kit to convert it to manual.
Anyone fitted one? I was going to fit a new valve body, would that have been a better choice?
Your thoughts please!

The shifter itself will not covert an auto box to manual to get manual features you have to get a manual valve body then you can fun :) If you get a manual valve body make sure you get one with low band apply, it will save you making a mess of your gearbox later.

The kit i have eliminates auto drive. Is this worth fitting or should I just fit a manual valve body?

I have fitted these kits before and they work fine, one big downside though. The only manual kits you can buy retain the factory PRN321 (forward) pattern which means as you shift up through the gears you are heading towards neutral, reverse and park, whack the shifter too hard or forget that you have already shifted into 3rd and you'll be in for a shock, I have seen it happen! Manual valve bodies are available in reverse pattern (PRN123) which is much safer in my opinion.

Oooppps misread that thought you had only bought a shifter :violent1: need to get more sleep.I agree with what John say's and have just got a reverse pattern valve body for my box 123. :)

Also easier to use on the street with 1st and neutral next to each other.

Cheers Jon,
I remember your car having a manual shifter at the Nats! after asking you where the kickdown cable was! then I thought about it!
Been looking at those transbrakes so hopefully I can get that ordered asap.
Thanks

If you are thinking of a transbrake valve body remember to have a good supply of halfshafts and propshaft joints with you as you will need them  either that or just uprate them to stange etc.

having tried manual and auto in my charger i would not have a manual again, just feels all wrong to be shifting with my right hand, and i had a nasty experience on the m25 where i wanted to 'kick down' but I went into 1 instead of 2 , easily done! (but i was using a standard shifter)

soon gets a bit tiresome having to change gears all the time and with auto you can still manually shift it, so thats the best of both worlds really.

If you got a really slippy convertor you dont have to keep changing down Will besides if you havn't got gay gears you hardly ever use first gear unless on the strip.

This dude at work was telling me that this was the best way to go, well obviously on his dads 8 sec car it probably is.
I do want it manual for this year, I dont mind shifting and I will be used for strip action and a bit of a beating in general.
I do need to get this sorted asap, would it be better to just stick with a manual body and not a transbrake? other than cahanging just the gear ratio/sure grip rear?
Cheers all.
