steering box rebuild maybe

Post by Anonymous »

I've been looking on the Firm Feel site and just wondered what people on here think about their power boxes with varying stages of resistance....I think I remember someone saying that they do not feel much different to standard...?

Also is it really worth it...?

Whats so special about their boxes apart from nice paint and new seals?

(forgetting the 'firm feel' bit just the actual re conditioning job)

I was not happy with my firm feel power box. It still had some slop in the steering wheel. Although most other people I have talked to feel thay are much better than stock.

I sent it back and got one of their fast ratio manual boxes. MUCH better. Happy with that. Although steering is heavy.

Wil can get you the NEW Flaiming River boxes if you want one of those.

But, by nature of the design, these boxes will never feel as good as R&P.

Cheers Dave. I saw the flaming river thread.

I'm happy to live with the nature of the set up (I drive old beemers dont I so I'm used to steering boxes  )

How much did your Firm Feel set you back to you doorstep? (If you dont mind me asking)

Pointless asking because it was many years ago so prices will have changed and I can't remember anyway.

Depends how you ship as well of course.

Also check out Steer and Gear http://www.steerandgear.com/, they also have a good rep (I bought a pitman arm in the past) and IIRC are a little cheaper than FF for the firm boxes.
I'm thinking about getting a box from one or the other. Since I'm not in a rush I was assuming my usual plan of waiting until next time I'm in the US and bringing one back, but there is a small chance that getting a group of buyers would make it worth doing from UK. Pluses are that you can probably get a (small) discount, but you really save on shipping. Minuses are the dreaded ripoff VAT/duty, and also these places normally have a core charge, so you either have to pay on top or ship them out the old unit.
Bottom line, my plan A prob works best for me but if you were interested in exploring the alternative and get any prices let me know!

PS - talk to Wil (Neil) on shipping too

The Firm Feel has a high core charge, BUT it's still not worth sending a core back, not yet anyway, this will change because the total cost of the box will continue to increase so at some point it will be viable.

The flaming River box has no core charge and actually works out cheaper than the firm feel because of this

The only thing the firm feel guys use is the case, everything else is new

The FR box is totally brand new
