Failed due to too much play in the rear bearing on the left hand side. Strange though, there's no play when you try to move the wheel from side to side (rocking it back and forth, if you know what I mean). When you try and pull the wheel away from the axle and Bananarama! back in again though, there's about a quarter of an inch play in it, at this point a discussion in the MOT place between two mechanics started, one of them said it was end float play and was ok but the one doing the MOT said it could be the bearing and wasn't ok.
it's getting looked at tomorrow, any ideas in the meantime though? Could just be that the bearing wants nipping up a bit or will it be the bearing itself?
TIA

If you have the original type bearings perhaps it needs nipping up. If the little dumbell shaped thing in the middle of the diff had broke this could cause excessive end play as it's used to tmake sure the slack is taken up in both bearings when adjusting at just one end on the original set up. If it's green bearings they are non adjustable and any in/out play is a knackered bearing.

Kev - that makes sense after reading through one of those workshop manuals that covers all vehicles of all makes (didn't have my manual with me at the time), in there it said that any adjustment should be made from the right hand side, left me wondering how adjusting on the right could take up any play on the left.
Dave - thanx for offering mate, but I don't have the car at home tonight, it's at Dicks place (RG Auto's) and will be getting checked out tomorrow, once I get my manual up there

All sorted now
the bearing just needed nipping up after all, both sides were checked just to be on the safe side though
Thanx to Andyrob as well for lending me two wheels from one of his cars to help get through the MOT while I wait for my new front tyres to get here. I had a cut in the wall of one of my tyres, leaving a small flap of rubber, the MOT guy lifted it up and as he could see the wire of the tyre he failed it (I did ask why he lifted it up and said he shouldn't have
), because I know someone will ask, I had to borrow two wheels so that both tyres were the same size on either side
