Door adjustments

mmm, very comprehensive reply Steve, more than I could of wished for.
Just been in the garage this afternoon having a look, getting door panel off and sussing out the glass alignment. Passenger door is fairly well located, but the glass isn`t sealing tight against A-pillar rubber and is too far back against quarter light (by about 3mm I guess), so I was wondering can I adjust glass fore and aft or do I need to move the door. The glass seems a little loose in the channel - is that normal (or wear and tear with age)?
Drivers door definitely needs adjustment, so I`ll be using some of your tips for that
