oil for manual steering box

Post by Valcuda »

(I've been away from this forum for about 2 years!!!)
The manual steering box on my 69 Valiant Cuda (South African) has leaked some oil over the years and I need to top it up. What oil should I use? I've got some Duckhams Hypoid 90 in my garage, will that be OK?It's rated as SAE90 of GL4 and MIL-L-2105A performance whereas the manual says I should use oil with a MIL-L-2105B performance. What do you think guys?
Thanks.

And when that drips out fill it with Castrol LM grease or similar. ;)

Combination of the two works best. Ask the other Dave. :thumbright:

indeed

i'm coming to the conclusion that regardles of where the box was made the worm screw and ball nut is the same. i.e made in a chrysler factory somewhere and exported all over

aussie ones are identical to 1960 onwards US ones. (apart from the case)
i guess given SA mopars got american or australian rear axels that a similar policy will have existed for steering boxes

aussie book says lubricate with grease or SAE90 gear oil

modern grease is just that 30 years more modern that that specified. so take your pick

if oil comes out put in grease instead

it is the way to go for a clean garage floor.
Proper adjustment and correctly inflated tyres is more important.

make sure the bearing pre-load is correct and you can't go wrong compared to other cars these boxes look like they were engineerd for trucks.

if stuck FirmFeel in the states will re-engineer your parts i.e sector and ballnut. and can do you some seals.

(a spanner pulled a right angles by a spring balance 90 degress acros the stiff bit) my spring balance was in lbs. not hugely accurate but better than nowt

the bearings for the sector shaft are rollers they might be an issue to get. none of mine were removed but they felt smooth enough

the worm screw runs on standard caged ballbearings which can be got here quite easily.

the box is quite simple, when i cracked my chassis i had to take mine off so i pulled it to bits and had a mootch

cleaned it out with diesel and repacked with castrol grease

nothing to em

if you take out the sector shaft push a dowel in (wickes came up with the goods) to keep the rollers in place
