:help: how can you tell which type of case i have. its an 8 3/4 but i can't see anything like 489 or whatever just a long series of numbers that don't seem to relate to anything

Look on the cast section ,l/h side between the prop flange and the ring of nuts.
1965 Belvedere 2 426 Wedge.

Casting numbers;
741 casing; 1820657 (1957-1964), 2070741 (1964-1972)
742 casing; 1634985 (1957-1964), 2070742 (~1961-1969)
489 casing; 2881488, 2881489 (1969-1974).

just checked axel case and it reads 1634985.according to kevs figures that 1957 to 1964.seems unlikely that its been changed so could this be right as its in a 69.while were on the subject is this case ok for a shuregrip in the future.
