Knocking from LHS

Right then, having finally had the opportunity to park two '68 Chargers together and compare everything, I think I might have found the problem. On my steering column, there's a bush type thing (my manual is currently on loan so no technical term I'm afraid) that is just sitting about halfway down the shaft that goes into the steering box, it doesn't appear to be doing anything or be there for any reason. On the other car, this bush thing is actually sitting quite away further up the shaft and looks like it's held in by two pins / screws of some sort, they don't have a screw or bolt type head though, they look like they have a head similar to that of a drawing pin?
I've tried to move the bush further up my column and it did move but, only after I'd moved the linkage for my column shift further up as well (this moved by about an inch
), I obviously need to secure this bush thing but dont know if the pins have a specific name or not?
I've attached a pic, (hope it's noticeable). The hole in the bush marked by the Black rectangle looks as though it needs to be held in to the hole on the column marked with the Red rectangle, theres another hole 180 degrees around it. does anyone know what the pin type things that I need are called?, can I use some sort of screw to hold it in place?

It's the bearing for the column shift linkage , as Ashley says , the factory put em in with self tapping bolts , if this were not sitting right , your three on the tree would be shifting all over the place.
Just tuck it back up & refix it , after you cover it in grease.
The bearing has two cutouts on the plastic retainer , which slot into the column , just move the bearing round till it slots all the way up into the column

Moved the bearing up into the column and bolted it in place, guess what....., couldn't move the gearshift out of park at all, took the bolt out and moved the bearing down a bit and the gearchange was back to normal but it still knocks when I drive it, now thinking that the column might be out of alignment if it's been driven like this for a while (is that possible?).
On top of all this the battery was flat tonight when I treid to start it, jumped it and took it out for a drive but the battery was still dead when I got back and turned it off then tried to restart it - I'll read up on the charging info elsewhere though
Now doubting whether I should take it to the nats, just incase the knock is the start of something serious
