how to fit an extra clutch plate in front clutch pack
half way through 727 rebuild and have found in kit i have 5 front clutch plates and 4 rear
box has only 4 in at moment but have read you can fit the 5 plates in but how?
would it be best to ring Dunc or has someone got a way to do it?
cheers

If it's a B&M kit you are useing then the clutch plates are thinner (same thickness as in the rear drum) to allow you to fit 5 into the front drum if it originally had 4 or 4 if it originally had 3, without any other mods. The Mod. that Trev is showing you is a 3 plate drum with a new snap ring groove so it can take 4 plates. If you are useing stock thickness front clutch plates and you want to add 1 extra clutch plate then the thick retaining plate under the snap ring needs to be machined to suit. Hope that makes sense!
“It’s good enough for Nancy”
extra clutch plates
the clutch plates and steels are the standard thickness just made by jaybestos company.
please email the picture of the machined grove as it may be the way forward and i can't access it of the mma site.

if your drum will only take 4 plates just put that amount in dont go to the trouble off machineing the pressure plates thinner to fit five friction in. the trans work fine with 4 plates in, i have run up to around 750 hp so far on 4 plates, every time i used the b+m plates 5 off after i tore my box down just to check it was ok that clutch had always burnt the b+m plates i dont rate them to much, put 4 stockers in you will be fine, i also read somewhere not to put 5 in i cant remember why but it was a good source
I think my Protrans 727 has 5 that seemed to work ok And most of the transmission bits people send here to ship back to England seem to be from Cope's Racing Transmissions ( they have a good website). I just had a mooch through the catalog and their race boxes have 5 clutches as do the Prostreet ones..
Have a word with Blue and see what he says, or Tig Napier he's just bought a boat load of stuff from them too. That big old Challenger with the indy motor needs some serious transmission, he builds his own boxes though, maybe you should have a word with him.

just fit the 4 plates, no hassles will take the power, 5 is a myth if a 3,8001b hemi challenger with a 2201b driver can go 10.2s on 4 plates yours will be fine, forget a lot off the hype, have heard it to many times, many parts that have worked well for yrs are suddenly no use because some rich guy stateside has decided that they arnt because such and such says so,
Didn't the hemi box come with 5? I dunno , but Trev's mod looks pretty cool though and as for expensive -I reckon Cope's Racing Transmission do a pretty good deal , a lot of the lads in England are buying his stuff now, I've got two more loads of it sitting here on the floor ready to go.
That dollar rate is a killer at the moment , one of those Prostreet tranny's is , what 600 quid?

yes hemi boxes came with 5 plates but was a deeper drum to accept them, but has been proved not needed so why waste time modifying the drum, or piston or end plate, when 4 suffice, i reckon by the time your on the edge off makin the clutch slip through high horsepower you will be in to breaking gear sets or input/ output shafts first
