Diff pinion oil seal advice

Post by Boz01 »

Hi,

any advice on changing the pinion oil seal on my 69 Dart diff?
i think i have got the 7.25 rear axle. the job looks pretty straight forward but there are dire warnings in the manual i have about overtightening the nut that holds the yoke in place. there seems to be some sort of collapsable spacer that collapses if its overtightened. the manual talks about measuring the turning torque - can i use a torque wrench for this, whats the process? After petes expereinces i will probably change the U.J aswell! :D

Here's what I would do

remove the brake drums so there is no drag on the diff at all

drain the oil

record the torque need in inch lbs to turn the pinion, you'll need a dial type inch lb torque wrench to do this

mark the uj, yoke and pinion end for correct reinstalation later

undo the pinion nut, pull the yoke and then the seal, don't use the front bearing to lever the seal out as the cage can be damaged.

Intall the new seal, yoke and nut and tighten to acheive the same turning torque as you recorded earlier + 5lbs, your manual probably lists turning torque on old and new bearings

this is how you change the seal on a 9.25

It may say this in your manual, this is how you change the seal on a 9.25

Hi Boz,

I recognise that car! It belonged to a good friend of mine, Old Keith?

I think you will find, the only diff that has the collapsable spacer is the 489code 8 3/4 axle. All the others should be ok to remove the yoke as per Wil's instructions.

Welcome to the club if you are a new member, if not, hello anyway!
Thats a fine Mopar you have there!!!
