I run 1/2" to 1" inch. It seems you can set it, then roll yer car a few feet and it's not the same, so it's best done with your car in stage as any undulation in the pit tarmac will give different gaps! I'm sure the starter and the opponent won't mind you scrabbling about under yer car!!
Don't forget to recheck it after any tyre pressure changes....

I found it only really worked when closer than one inch to the floor. But I guess it depends how much axle twist you want and how the suspension reacts when you come off the line. It might even depend on how stiff the front section of your rear springs are as well.
The pinion snubber is like the spring slapper bars that were popular once and are still used by some. In fact they work exactly the same.
I adjust up to just a quarter inch clearence (track only) because I DON'T want any spring twist and because I DO want as much weight transfer as possible and I want the body to RISE on the rear suspension for max traction.
I seem to remember Richard Ehrenberg telling me to use a quarter inch clearence during a conversation once as well. But I might be mistaken about that.
Bloody memory.
Anyway. I back the snubber right off for on the road.
