Advice needed on modern electrics

Post by Pete »

Well, the old achillies heel of the Durango raises its head again.
More lights up on the dashboard than a Christmas tree; though everything still appears to work.

I need advise on an experienced and COMPETENT dealer or servicing agent that can get to grips with this without changing every electrical component in the car until the faults are fixed.

Any recommendations of a place. preferably in the Cambrisgeshire/Herts area?

Many thanks :thumbright:

Try disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes. Could reset the ECU.

It's free though :D You'll probably need someone with an OBD2 interface and code reader. TrevD's mate who does Nitrous has got one.

On that year Pete I don't think disconnecting the battery won't work, if it does the ecu will see the fault again and the lights will be back.

And i'll think you'll find a normal OBDII does not see chrysler, DC were a little crafty and didn't make it quite as federal law stated it should be which is open

Most vehicles 2003 and newer use the NGC powertrain controller with the VPW or CAN network interface. For 1996 to 2002 and legacy vehicles using the SBEC or JTEC powertrain controllers,

Chrysler family vehicles (Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Jeep, etc) use a proprietary protocol to access extended powertrain data called SCI. The protocol requires a separate 'SCI Only' cable be used since it share pins with and is incompatible with ISO-9141

I've got a scanner for my ram, when I bought it the Co that designed it hadn't cracked the DC code so it has very limited use, it worked ok for what I needed it for at the time but I haven't updated it as I haven't needed to yet.

My ram is 98, disconnecting the battery did nothing, the fault was a once only deal (my fault) 50 turns of the ignition key put the lights off, if a fault occurs once and never again on a 98 then as long as there has been 50 restarts without the ecu seeing the fault the lights will go out, doubt that will work on yours though.

Like I say, I have a scanner if you need one but it needs to be updated at a cost of $130

Thanks for your input guys. I do not intend fixing this one myself - I have too much on my plate.

Any recommendations of Main agents who know what they are talking about?

just rebuilt a 9.25 rear axle out of a 2004 ram, Chrysler dealer charged the guy £950 for new calipers, pads and parkbrake shoes because the abs light was on.
Course the brake work didn't do squat, they took the cover off of the housing and found 1 tooth damaged on the tone ring and all 4 of the clutch pack bushings lying in the bottom..... they then told the guy "We can't fix it sorry"
if they had the scanner they would have been able to see the rear abs sensor would have been outside parameters...... because it had a chunk out of it and a tooth missing off of the ring

If it has a digital odometer you can pop the ignition on off on off on and the digits should read out a list of 'P' codes that can be found online.
