Umm... I dont 'geddit' either. I follow most motorsport, but dont get drag at all. One thing I will say though - Although I started firmly in the 'Straight line, press the accelerator quickly - so what?' camp there is one thing being in this club has taught me.

That is that EVERYONE who has actually tried it seems to be utterly, hopelessly, irrecoverably HOOKED. There is clearly an awesome experience there for those who get the bug...

Surely the development of 'the pit' has been the ultimate example ? You wanna see a man converted to the drag-religion look at the transformation Adam has made with his 68 Charger.

So, I have to conceed that although as a spectator I dont 'get it', I have a) Never tried it and b) Have learned to respect that the people in this club (who I do respect!) get one heck of alot out of it. This is the best car-club in the world with some of the most helpful and cool car blokes ever. Therefore, there must be something in it !

Just me and trigger_andy so far on the non-drag side ?

Thought - Maybe its just having an ickle 318 that is the problem. Maybe the wife would let me move to a 440.... (and so it starts....)

What you don't say Morgan is if you have ever seen Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars at the track. i.e. not on TV and not on a computer game.

Don't knock it as a spectator sport unless you have. Otherwise how can you tell if you "get it" or not?

Thats not stopped Kev getting low 11 sec runs out of the Taxi, mind you a Charger would not be quite as quick with a 318. Saying that though Petes old 318 71 Cuda convertable ran 11's with a dose of drugs aswell

I've never been down the track, but have been going to the HRD's and Nostalgia Nats on and off since '91, and i've got to say it is a fantastic sport to watch.

The NOISE!!, the smells, the atmoshere, totally amazing!

First time i went, didnt know what to expect really, stood next to Smax Smiths old car ('39 chev altered?) when it was fired up, hooked from that moment on.

The people that dont get it? I don't get that!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only reason Ive done it is that I can have a ciggy at regular intervals (usually half a pack in the fire up lanes). Ya see thats the problem with circuit racing...

I had thought that its got to be better doing it than watching it. Racing for cash and prizes in S/S (occasionally

) is a pure adrenalin rush, and alternates between elation and misery (offset by alcohol consumption in t'evening). The comraderie and competitiveness is superb. The tension and excitment gets so great for me that I have to concentrate my mind in the fire up lane (at York there is usually a quick turn round) and cant talk!

Even RWYB events like the Nats, even tho its not strictly competitive, most run in a competitive spirit. Particularly those who are determined to knock another tenth off their best!

Dont really understand what the hook is but it does get to you.

Yes, I have seen top-fuel and funny cars. Top fuel are incredible - any car that actually shakes the ground with the noise has to be worth seeing.

I think its the overriding feeling of "Racing should have duration, corners and strategy" - a drag race just feels like the first few seconds of an actual race, but without the dicing for position bit...

I know, I know - its me. I already put my hands up to that. I am learning, and the more time I spend around this club the more I appreciate it. Maybe I do need to take my poor old Charger up the strip. Heck, it'll help me chase out the pinking if nothing else !

PS - I was lucky(???) enough to be in the gantry when the rocket car was doing its run at year-before-last nats. BANG ! BANG ! The whole thing shakes... scary.

That was a Jet car Morgan......now a Rocket car is something else

And to have been Lucky enough to have seen the Late Great Sammy Millers Rocket cars, Oxygen and Vanishing point do a side by side, in the mid 80's......NOW thats entertainment

its always the same ive had "discussions" on why/how a f1 car will blow a funny car away?? its hard to educate the uneducatable

but the sight & sound of a funny car or top fueler giving all its got (well nearly all) down a 1/4 mile drag strip is unbelievable
