Mopars you missed out on - "Wish I'd bought X back in..

Post by morgan »

The superbirds thread got me thinking.
Not only have people on here had some amazing cars, but it seems they have missed out on some amazing cars too...

Things like Daves Hemi Cuda (Who could have guessed ?) , DaveBishops £2,500 superbird etc....

SO - (I know value of money has changed in the years) the question is - "What is the Mopar you most regret not buying when you had the chance ? " with a sub question of "How much could you have got it for ?" :)

Could be interesting. (No grown men crying over missed chances though. No-one wants to see that ! )

While theres no specific car for me I remember seeing hemi and wing cars at a price I could have stretched to when I first got into the hobby....
Didn't go for one because I didn't have a garage or room for another car back then,

Here's one that didn't get away:

In 1982 i went to Indiana and bought a 1969 Hemi Road Runner for $5,000 @ $2.42 to the pound at the time = about £2,000. It had 44,000 miles from new.

Here's one that did:

In Virginia in 1981 I was offered a 1969 Coronet R/T convertible for $1,300 (£540 at the time) I hesitated because it had a leaky radiator. When i went back to the guy the next day he'd sold it to someone else. Oh well.

I am sure Adam Ford won't mind me telling everyone how much his 1970 Coronet R/T cost back in 1980 ... $700 (£290 at the time)

I remember missing out on a white 1970 Hemi Cuda for £9,500. Supposedly matching and in really good condition.

Trouble was, I was only 13 at the time and was on £2 a week from my parents. A bit out of my league.

The car bit is true

Reel Steel used to bring in cars when they first started trading.

Nearly did a deal with them in about '85 for my car at the time ('48 Austin Dorset) plus £2500 for a '62 bubble top 409 (twin 4 barrels) Impala that Alan Carrington was trying to off load at last years Nats for £63000? (and that lived in Blues lock up for a bit) 8-) .

'67 Belvedere, genuine hemi car, minus hemi and Dana60, £600 in the late '80's.
'67 Barracuda notchback, genuine 383 big block car with a 273 in it, £250 in the mid '80's, umm and arred too long, went to get it and they'd "lost it on the insurance" and cut it up.
'68 Barracuda convertible, tidy car in the early '80's £350.
'60's Mustang convertible, 289 4 speed manual, good pony interior. needed nothing more than a paint and a new top £250. Mate of mine bought it when I passed it up, made a pile on it a couple of years later.

One that didn't get away, swapped my scruffy 10 year old Ford Corsair for my first Mopar, a '67 Barracuda formula S 4 speed.

The other thing you have to remember "back then", was yes, the cars were cheap, but average wages were low, insurance was relatively high and if you bought something American it would most likely be your only car so you drove it every day.
