How do you get that sticky stuff off a steering wheel?

Post by Blue »

Need to find a cleaner to get that sticky residue off a plastic coated steering wheel. Needs to be non abrasive so as not to mark or discolour the surface. So far I've tried washing up liquid, Cillit bang universal degreaser, and I was going to try oven cleaner but I thought that might be a bit too aggressive. The cupboard under the sink doesn't seem to contain anything else that looks promising...

How about panel wipe? That sometimes does the job without marking - you'd need to test an area first. I assume you have some but if not I've got plenty.

Otherwise......stick it in the fridge or freezer even and see if the gloop goes hard enough to pick it off, works for chewing gum (or take a piece if ice and put it on the goo for a bit.

Sometimes rubbing it with a bit of kitchen roll has worked for me - the stickiness pulls off some of the paper and uses up some of the stickiness, so to speak, keep rubbing and it comes off.

All or none of the above may work...

dont forget baby wipes worked on my sticky stearing wheel, takes a little time but eventually it comes good, well worth the effort in the end, 1 wet wipe then dry with a tea towel (dont tell the missus) then do the same again & again

wd40 smells nasty so does diesel

you'd also be amazed at what gunk there is on your daily driver steering wheel & gear knob, go on give it a go you know you want to
ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, you fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

I usually use isopropyl alcohol for things like that. Working in a Medical School has its advantages.

I've just sloshed some engine cleaner round it, that showed it who was boss. Works a treat. Just needs a bit of a polish up and job's a good 'un. Thanks for your suggestions.
