Hi J,
I think it does matter to my recollection the wires are black and green the alternator should read field and battery.
Try this link it might help I recall the lower one was abitch to get at and always gave the most problems.

If you have the later earth supply regulator then both field posts on the back of the alternator will be insulated from the casing, if so then it doesn't matter which wire goes on which terminal.
If you have the earlier + supply regulator then there should be 1 post insulated and 1 not insulated, connect the reg wire to the insulated terminal
