sounds more like a dicky regulator in the case you mention.
regualtor should do as its name suggest and regulate current in 1 set of coils in the alternator so it produces enough current to charge battery and run the ancillaries you have swicthed on.
I may be wrong though i'm quite good at that...

however i use a bloody big bosch battery for my 265 it fitted on the battery tray and didn't hit the hood.
may alterantors good for a whole 36 amps of current
been good for 2 years so far
