an alternator shouldn't be able to overcharge a battery

sounds more like a dicky regulator in the case you mention.

regualtor should do as its name suggest and regulate current in 1 set of coils in the alternator so it produces enough current to charge battery and run the ancillaries you have swicthed on.

I may be wrong though i'm quite good at that...

however i use a bloody big bosch battery for my 265 it fitted on the battery tray and didn't hit the hood.

may alterantors good for a whole 36 amps of current

been good for 2 years so far

I just don't see why anyone would need a diesel transit battery, the comp ratio on a diesel transit is 21.5/1 although the starters on diesels are geared a bazzilion to 1 the other way but as Kev says why? it's just added weight

the only reason i can see is if the wiring is a little on the lets say decrepid side then a higher amp battery may save the day

I've got a 2001 ram with the 5.9 petrol and the battery is tiny does it struggle to start it.no

On a four cylinder ie transit there's 1 in 4 cylinders coming up to firing at any point which will help the starter like once every 90 degrees.

On a 8 cylinder it's much more progressive with a 1 in 2 somewhere very close to firing like once every 45 degrees.

So a v8 needs a lot less starter power than a 4 cylinder motor as it only takes one cylinder to fire and everything is running and there's twice as many cylinders.

Sort the electrics, fit a good regulator ( which i can supply) make sure there's no drain on the battery, and fit one recommended for a 4 cylinder petrol you'll still be over the top
