FIRE! FIRE! - Is this timing?!

Post by Anonymous »

Evening all,

Well it lasted nearly 3 months, but it was only a matter of time before something went wrong and I got a crash course in mopar mechanics :x

After intending to have a go at adjusting my carb (thanks to a sound lesson in the 750 holley courtesy of Keith - MoparKM) I found that the timing must have slipperd (Is this right?) as when turning it over a foot high flame appears from the carb :?

Thing is when I first brougth the car, the previous owner told me the car was over heating and that it may have been caused by the timing being off - so I paid a bloke ?50 to set it for me. So either I've been conned and he didnt do a thing with the timing (which I know isnt the case as the car ran well for a good 2 month after) or something is causing the timing to slip? :?

Any ideas what this could be and what I can do to fix it? Also Im not paying ?50 again to have the timing put right - can anyone tell me the settings for a 383 and any handy hints/help to get it right myself?

Any help would be great

Cheers,

Dave

Look around the previous posts here, there is loads of great text written by members on exactly the way to tune the whole motor :)

Alf, there was a highly detailed post on this issue a couple of weeks back in this section. It was so good that I cut and pasted the lot and put it in my files for reference!

?50 to set your timing? And here is me been doing it for nowt for the last 25 years......which one of us is the bigger mug I wonder?

Well it boils down to this. If you want a job done properly the very least you can do is learn how it is done so that if you really have to pay someone to do it you can at least check they have done it right.

All you need is a timing light and a half inch AF spanner to set basic timing. If you just got it to idle and set it to 12 degrees advanced you would be ballpark.

Read this thread first. http://www.mopartalk.co.uk/mopartalk/vi ... php?t=1998

You may not understand all of it at first. Don't worry about that. Have a go and see how you get on.

As for what has gone wrong...it does sound like timing but other things can cause this. Best make sure the timing is right first though. Then if there is still a problem we can look deeper into it.
