Is there a way you can legally register a race car for the road with no VIN tag and no paperwork? Short of getting a logbook from another car, I don't think there's a way around it is there?

Unless things have changed, I registered a Bultaco trials bike for the road and was given an age related number plate. I seem to remember the guy from the DVLA came to my lock up and recorded the details. It had been in the country for some years but never registered. Having said that it did have a frame number of course.

And what about kit cars, I know a lot use the main donor car as the registered vehicle but what about kits that use everything new like a Cobra? There must be some way they do it?

Best bet would be to call the local DVLA I would think.

It probably still has a partial VIN on the rad support and cowl. You can work out most of the original VIN from that. It is only the 2nd and 5th digits of the VIN that you need to find out.

The 5th digit is the engine code. So if you can find out what the original engine was you have that. If you know what the original engine was chances are you will tell of it is an R/T or not. So that gives you the second digit as well.

This way you will know what the complete original VIN was. If that is any help.

With an MOT, DVLA will issue you a Chassis # (not MoPar, there own ) and it will go on a "Q" plate. ( like a built up from parts kit-car )

Looks crap and will always be worth peanuts but it will be road legal.

BTW.....this is the reason this car was "cheap" and why it didn't sell many other times

To clarify this, I've been speaking to Matt and Budgie is partialy right, the DVLA will issue a VIN for the vehicle. However you WILL get an age related plate if Matt writes a letter to the DVLA for you, proving it's year of manufacture, all for a fiver plus the £25 or whatever that the DVLA charge.

Martin is right, if age of the car is provable, which is should be, then DVLA will hopefully issue an age related plate and their own VIN number. This is preferable to a Qplate and will happen mostly. I have got several cars off Q plates for members in the past.
My job also entails working with DVLA on VIN number enquiries, (Police Stolen Vehicle Examiner), so I know what the processes are, albeit they can be slow!
With a letter from me as club nominated person, your local DVLA office may be able to process your application to register the car in one quick visit. They may want to inspect it first.
