Manually shifting an automatic trans at the strip

Post by Anonymous »

Okay, why would you want to do such a thing ?

If the heads produce peak power @ say 6000 RPM & the box shifts @ say 4500/5000 RPM , then you have'nt reached the potential to what the motor was built for.

Sorry about the layman terms.

Ah, I thought I was missing something obvious from Wendy's thread.

The gearbox is at fault then.

If you want to shift at 6000rpm, set the box up to shift at 6000rpm. No need to farf around hitting a lever every now and then, with the possibility of shifting at 5800rpm one shift and 6200rpm the next.

Let the box do it itself.

your both right in a way, the governor does say the last word when the trans upshifts flat out, the hemi trans had a different weight gov to let it rev out more automaticaly i have come accross plenty off trans that have had the v body modified and they to let the trans shift much later without gov mods, most people sandy prefer to shift manually feels more involved, but not necc benificial in a stock/slightly modded car

One guy on the yank site was saying he modded the T/F (changed weights) so it shifted @ 6000 RPM , how would this work on the road?

Dunc can you adjust the rev point at which the box changes /
Ie if you want it to change at say 5500 or six and would that give you the best or would it pay to change at lower revs in 1/2 than 3rd?.

you have hit it there bob, its not always best thet the trans shifts at the same rpms in each gear, thats why a manual shift works the best, look at a lot off race cars they are set to shift, say 6,200 on the 1~2 shift and say 6,800 in to top

you may have to lift at times to let the box change stick as you are
