Noisy Dana?

Post by newport100 »

Got to play with he Chally yesterday and went for a 1/2 hour spin- all good until I got back to near home and noticed a alaming noise from the rear - hard to tell what it is over the engine noise but sounded like the rear wheels were rubbing or something fouling- only occuring at very low speed and turning (about 1/2 lock)

checked all i could visually and couldnt see anyhing amiss so tucked it away for the night

Went out again today and - Great no noise!!!

until it warmed up and then then it started again

been reading up and have found some info that Dana,s can be noisy?-

is this so?-maybe is something I have to live with??

Has it got a Detroit Locker? These are noisy on turns at low speed. Or else the bearings or lsd are playing up. Or maybe, if you are lucky, an axle bearings.

Think it's the other way round Mark , Dana's are quieter due to the way the gears are cut.

what type of LSD is might have the wrong oil in it . as it sounds like the oil is being squeezed out of the plates .. ..if a clutch type need high pressure additive or correct LSD oil

We had similar when we 1st got the 63. Nasty noises from the back end on slow turns - roundabouts, reversing etc; we thought the rear drums were sticking.

Paul at Southern Axles said it might need some limted slip / differential additive, so after adding some, hey presto, no more noises.

Well, none from the rear end

I presume the Dana would need an additive too? I think it's for all limited slip or posi differentials :-k

Yes, sounds like it doesn't have posi oil or additive added.

Not sure about Danas, but the GM additive is about the best for clutch packs.
