neutral safety switch problem
The neutral safety switch on my charger is not working(727 box). I replaced it recently with a new one but that doesn't work either. I've tested the old one and it is not faulty so I presume it is an internal problem with the box. Is this an easy fix? At the moment I have the starter relay earthed continually to enable starting which is not ideal. I thought about connecting a switch to the brake pedal so it would only start with foot on pedal just incase it was in gear but I would rather fix the problem properly really. Also is this an MOT failure?

There is nothing internal that is extra to the switch. The gear selector lever on the box has an internal lever which presses on the switch to stop it working when in gear. As long as the gears are selecting correctly then the switch will be working.
The wiring can be faulty in several places.
At the switch itself.
Along its length - in particular where it passes over an exhaust pipe.
At the bulkhead connector - most common!
At the starter relay.
At the starter.

Well this morning I checked the end of the wire that connects to the relay and it showed continuity on my test meter so I reconnected and it works fine now. Perhaps you guys are right about the starter relay. Every thing else has been replaced, new wiring (painless), new switch, new length of wire from relay to switch and new starter. Thanks for the reply.
My car suffers from similar problems, but the worst, is that you need to be quite persuasive with the shifter to get it out of Park. Shifting between D,N, R, 1 and 2 no problemo. Back into P is ok too but out of Park, you gotta be rough man.
When RPM did all the MOT work they said the linkage needs re-building/re-bushing (I suppose there is a kit for this). ?750 I was quoted. Dont know if that is indicative of the amount of work required,
