A funny thing happened on the way home from Shakey....

Post by Philth »

So there I was, cruising home with Kev after a great weekend at Shakey, just minding my own business at the speed limit, when, after a M25 'Tunnel Pass' I said to Kev, "car's pulling to the right, and there's loads of vibration". "Shall we pull over on the hard shoulder and have a quick look?". he says. "Nah. It'll make it home - it's only another couple of junctions...". So I slow right down to less that truck speed, we make it off the M25 and onto the A127 and decide to pull off at Cranham to check the car over....
HELL'S TEETH!
Huge hole in the front right tyre (Pos-A-Traction). Basically, if it wasn't for the fact they had inner tubes in I would not like to think what would have happened.
So, kiddies, check yer tyres - if they're old, CHANGE 'EM!
Budge - I'll be in touch sooner rather than later, mate!

 ........what was it we where talkin about son

Most "blow outs" are caused by an unnoticed slow puncture and hence then run-on at low pressure and that's when they let go = blow-out.

I'll get your new stuff together Phil ;)

This was no slow puncture - we're talking tread separation! The tyre remained fully inflated, thanks to the inner tube (which I didn't even know it had). We heard/felt a 'thunk' under the car just before the A127 turn-off, which must have been the small portion of tread that came off and bounced off of the floor pan.
Luckily I still have spare front wheels/tyres in my garage so was able to get home in the end.
Big thanks to Kev for his calm head (no laughing at the back) and the too-ing and fro-ing in his family Jeep, and for his wife Carole for coming out to 'resue' us in the first place!
