Have you seen the size of the puny wire that comes from the alternator ? thats why I have a Lucas alt and the output wires go straight to the battery not only that but 99% of car spares shops keep Lucas alternators and the bulkhead connectors are only small and they have to be clean or resistance will build up and it will get HOT !!!!! my mate Scott had the same problems and we replaced the block connectors made sure the whole lot was clean then put some battery terminal protector on them replace your wireing Darren it makes sense !!!!!!!!

sounds like the ammeter Bananarama! somthing like the body work under the dash.

masive draw of current will cause regulator an issue it tries to get the alternator to keep up.

nasty..

my ignition lock connector went on fire...was totally amazed at how a little bit of greeny corrosion was enough to get it hot enough to catch a hold on the insulation. put that one out inadvertantly with my knee

once had a beetle fill with oil

oil cooler burst and the mist came through the heater and coverd the inside of the screen, i wonderd why i was seeing rainbows but put it down to somthing else!. wasn't alarming just tasted yuk

My Aussie Charger went up in a very similar way years ago- I'd been 'tidying' the wiring

I'd connected the charging wires up wrong and 20 mins down the road smoke's pouring out of the dash! Scary bit was once i'd stopped and switched it off, the engine was still turning over, making this horrible whining noise

It turned out a live had melted thru the starter motor wire and that was cranking the engine! Only stopped when i levered a batt lead off.

fires are the death of most old cars

years ago ( dave might remember

) white earlier 70's vette parked up in a garage went on fire in sunderland car was toast, only the chassis left

check for what caused it, you may be suprised. Like Dave says, look for a wire earthing. i had such a fire last year, same issue as fusable link burnt out. I checked the wire from the alternator to the bulkhead junction.
It had inadvertantly come loose from its fixing and shorted out onto the exhaust manifold=Total electrical failure.

I bypassed the bulkhead connector with corect wiring and in fitted an line fuse (slow burn) to replace the fusable link.
