I think the issue is not only related to fuel prices and people who choose to disallow one groups licence or event because it affends their sensibilities.

the issue is across the board

in the scooter scene and the VW scene and the Yank car scene
we are now boring old farts with other commitments.

(Also scotters and VDubs a bit like hot rods is a fasion statement and way of life etc mopars doesn't seem to be)

what is the average age here? 40???? 50???

the kids just think we are old and odd

if we were all 26 we would still be old farts compared to the guys who years ago went to everything regardless of cost, drove anything, chopped up and sprayed anything, because they felt like it.

local scooter club meets prince of wales in twickers on a friday night
average age 40 not 16-24 not cool not what the kids want. a pint of oldfart and a new bit of dead wolf for me parka hood please...look at the tassles on that etc

VWs fair a bit better because there are/were so many of them but the days of 30,000 at the pod for Bug jam are probably gone, most of the crowd from the 86-92 era need a van now.....and they are now quite expensive just like a charger or cuda or roadrunner.

you get older you recerate what you had when you were younger you spend much more on it and the price of the whole thing moves up with your own financial situation, which removes it completely from the grass roots end of the scale that feeds the future

if no one could afford to spend 5000 on a TV175 18,000 on a split screen van 10-150,000 on a mopar. they wouldn't cost that much

it would be 1975 and we would be spending pocket money on modes of transport that nobody wanted, and loads of em would be getting smashed thrashed and chopped up

making it even more expensive for the next lot who show an interest in 30 years time.

you can get more through the gates at the mopar nats but it would involve advertsing in Volksworld mini pervert and performance ford as well as the usual.
right era of car wrong type of car

i.e you, at minimum annoy the faithful supporters at worst its no longer the mopar nats

and you really up the gate if you put on entertainment that appeals to those with no real interest in racing...i.e you loose the family vibe let in the "legal high" brigade crystals josssticks and vintage clothes and stick the latest dance act or car-wash on the main stage a comedy tent a drive in movie...48 hours of disco pants and wigs

does anyone here want that....probably no.

the evening entertainment works as it is but it appeals to those who already go are always going to go...it aint going to attract anyone else and its not supposed to. the cars and the racing should do that bit

the number of cars and car ownership is always going to decrease unless young people buy them........ at the moment they are not.

I think Dave's about right there.
My first car was £150 to buy and the same to insure at age 18,when I was 19 I had a 3l Granada that cost £250 to buy and £330 to insure, the Mustang was the same insurance figure the next year. All do-able at that age living at home with parents and earning about £65 a week.
Nowadays it's virtually impossible to insure a yank under age 25.At 18,a £50 Fiesta/Nova is going to be £2K to insure.By the time most youngsters are in a position to get into this hobby they're married with 2 kids and a mortgage and won't have the time or money to have their dream for another 15 years.

When I retuned to the "American car scene" I was keen to go to the billings type shows just to see the different cars in all there glory.
However after a couple of years It kinda erked me to think I was paying to get into an event where basically I and the other owners were the main reason that the the paying public were there.
The basic difference for me between these types of events and the Mopar Nats is the RACING.
In other words I go to the Nats for a different reason.
And the fact that there are a range of cars simlpy adds to the weekend, lets face it if you own a mopar you want to thrash the odd escort or mustang it adds to the fun.
And the fact that you can follow a 6 sec race car with a 16 sec road rat is just great.
The mopar Nats are special and that's down to the organisers long may they continue and I would still be there if the gate price was higher as there is lots to see even if you don't own a car, the informal feel around the pits reminds me of the Goodwood type event and you don't get charged to go in the beer tent and act stupid(sorry Al).
So with the cost of getting to any event going through the roof I for one will be far more selective about where and how far I will go but one thing is for sure the more the event is like the Nats the further up my list it will be.
So its bye bye Billing and Knebworth and hello Garys picnic and the Nats.
