faulty horn

Post by Mick »

Just trying to sort my mess of electrics.
Got front and back lights but no brake lights, indicators, dash lights or horn.
Nearly all lights in dash are blown, the horn works but not from steering wheel, the wiring diagram, shows a 3 pin relay but mine has 5, also, there is no wire on centre of steering wheel, does anyone know where else they are earthed. There is a red and white wire in boot not connected.
I dont have the side indicators in, so would this stop the front and back from working.

I think that they are a switched earth when you press the horn button you allow the relay to earth which activates it sending power to the horns

Assuming like guy says its a switched negative circuit and the relay is switching....

Just sort out the one circuit and you'll probably find you'll cure the lot if it is a bad earth

look at the colour codes going to the horn. If it is a switched negative both sides should be +12V all the time when measured down to the bodywork. Find this wire on the relay and then hopeully the relay will have a a little diagram on it, find the other side of the contact pair that wire connects to on the relay and measure across them this should also read +12V, this will proved the switched side's path to earth. You may have an open circuit path the earth.

If the relay isnt switching...

then try to identify the coil pair on the relay. test each side with respect to a known +12V feed. the side that gives the reading should be the -VE return. You could then try to activate the relay by touching a (fused for safety) +12V test lead to the other side. this should trigger the relay and sound your horn with any luck.

Most of this you'll probably have tried already but hope it helps some
