I need to remove the big bolt on the front end of the crank to access the timing cover. How doi get it off?
The engine just turns over. Have I got to put rope down the spark plug holes?
I normally do this with the engine in the car with the power steering pump still conected by putting a spanner on the bokt on the snout of the p/s pump works a treat every time . If the engine is out even easier get sonebody to hold a spanner on one of the bolts ant the other end of the crank.
i guess everyone will cring at this, and it may explain why the flex plate i sent dave had a small bend in one leg, but i have in the past put a hefty screwdriver thru the flexplate and turned it til it jams agains the block, then the bolt undoes !
Blimey, lots of options then. The engine is still in situ ,but the steering pump is removed. On two strokes I used to build we'd use a conrod holder. I'l try to shock it off i guess.
ps How much does a small block weigh, need to order a hoist/crane for removal?
Thanks to all, as ever
pps Steve, laquer over the primer and rust and freeeze it in time! (The Chrysler 300, that is)
I'd say the safest and easiest way to do it would be take the sump off, jam the wooden handle of a hammer up there and wedge it between one of the crank throws and the block.
gotta say though, I used hughs method with the flexplate jamming technique
Smallblock weighs about 600lbs (270kg). Agree it's best to build in a bit of safety, although mine has comfortably sat on my 350kg engine stand for some time. Not the same as a hoist mind, but if you really can't get a 1000kg hoist there's a fair bit of margin there!!
