Source for large O-ring in the UK??

Post by MrNorm »

I need a new O-ring for my steering column - see attached pic for the one I mean. It's a 2 11/16" outside diameter and 1/4" thick (68mm by 6mm would also do I think!)

It just acts as a seal that gets squashed to grip the steering column, so it doesn't even need to be a fancy material, anything that fits.

Any suggestions as to where I could easily get one of these in the UK - preferably local or orderable online. Or failing that any suggestions for making one?

Thanks :thumbright:

Try a plant hire/digger place that rebuilds hydraulic rams, failing that there are some kits around to make your own.

I'm reliably informed that a water pump O ring for a Land Rover is 68mm x 6mm. Being as I haven't got a ruddy clue about them myself, though, you might want to get a second opinion! :D

How about a Weber flexible rubber manifold O ring? I reckon that should be about the right size...if anyone knows, I've got loads at home!

Hmmm, well I've drawn a blank so far, tried a few of the options. Mark, dunno if yours at work turned out to be right, it would be seriously useful if so!!

I did do some research on the LR option and it does appear to be correct, I do think they are 68x6 and it looks like they were used on the 2.5 BMW Diesel-engined Range Rover 2's. But still need to confirm, and most places just sell the whole pump assy I think. Plus not tracked down anyone local yet.

No wonder the cars taking so long when minor parts like this are time consuming to find!

wickes do a seal designed to repair the interface between a close coupled toilet cistern and the back shelf of the toilet i.e the place where the water runs from cistern into the bowel rim.
its a diy bodge type fix for sistuations where your flush or cistern are long obsolete or subjected to metrification. the kind of thing that only comes in the kit for the toilet installation that when you need a new one you can't find

its on the rack with the extra olives fibre washers bits of toilet flush chrome sleaveing for your radiator pipes etc

its high density foam rubber and will stretch or compress to fit many things they can be comressed down to approx 2 mm thickenss with a bit of spirited spannering

looks like a 1/2 inch thick donut and is approx steering column diameter and is black

i have used them for many things.

novelty earings
big comedy specs

and HIFI turntable related i.e isolation pads

at approx 3 quid and local gotta be worth a try

Need to check it's the right one, but worth investigating. :thumbright:

If Jon's weren't right for some reason, obviously. That looks the way to go at the mo! :thumbright:

Fantastic :thumbright: I'm probably going Sunday this year...so if you could leave them with one of the gang...or anyone else you care to!
I haven't asked but I'm sure Blue, Stu/Robtwin, Matt H, Keith (Moparkm), Ivor, James(Holley), philth, jem, richard, or any of the Herts or Essex mob would be happy to hold them for a day!!

If you don't know any of them give 'em to someone you do know and I'll find em.

Thanks again Jon, very kind of you
