Yet again, the practice of a minority of chavs who move the letters and numbers around on their number plates in a vain attempt to make them look like a name ruins it for the rest of us and all because the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system initiated by some freeloading EU bureaucrat can't read them.

Grrrr!

A friend who worked for LB Westminster told me that there is a large un-publicised problem of congestion charge dodgers getting "show plates" made up with the number of a similar car. Unsuspecting legitimate owner then gets the automatic penalty notice.

Had a quick check (and I mean quick, not exhaustive check!) and found this on the DVLA site:

There are separate requirements for traditional number plates displayed on vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973.

Lettering and spacing must be of a set size. They must conform to one of the groups shown at:- Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 or Number plates fitted before 1September 2001.

Therefore, as nearly all our members cars are pre-73, I would surmise that a period style number plate such as the pressed aluminium Ace style plates and Hills pyramid plates will remain available and perfectly acceptable.

Pressed States plates have always been a bit "iffy" my Road Runner failed the MOT on States Plaets due to insufficient space between the letters and the numbers, but squeezing WRP 198H on an American style plate was going to be a tight fit.

I made up conventional style plates here at work, specifically for the MOT.

My feeling is that this legislation is aimed at the criminal element and relates to modern cars, so I see no reason why suppliers of "classic" number plates can't continue to supply them, in the meantime, I'll see if I can dig out any more information.

Maybe Matt can help with this one?

'Registration of number plate suppliers to be extended to Scotland and Northern Ireland'

I guess there will be a few ROI plate sellers popping up on Ebay then :)

I'd love to know how you get away with that one? Or do you live in Indiana as well!

When i had my General Lee on the road, I only had a rear numberplate, the front one was a rebel flag . I never got pulled or whinged at once!

I have a theory.. when cops see that car coming towards them, the whole thing is so unfamiliar to them they are looking at it, looking at whose driving.. don't notice there is no plate, and if they did notice, they're driving in the opposite direction, and maybe, it might even occur to them, that perhaps there is no criminal activity here, because nobody would be dumb enough to be drivinga car like that, the most recognisable car in the world.. with no insurance or MOT etc !
