Pull needle back off and let the shaft settle to where it wants to be again.
Now fit needle firmly in the six o'clock position and then gently encorage needle clockwise and over the pin so as to give it a bit of tension thus holding the needle against the pin.
If this still sees a gap between needle and pin at rest then repeat but use 5 o'clock.
If you've not done it by 7 o'clock then give up!

You must of at some stage?
Did you build it back up with it lying on its back because this could have upset where it wanted to rest and now its vertical the return properties may have changed?
Mechanical speedos are fickle old things.
I am no expert but I have mucked about with a few different ones.

Thanks Trev, I found it quite easy, It only take about 30mins to take the whole cluster out, then another 30mins taking all the clocks out. Just be careful as you have to unbolt the wires from the amp meter, If you unscrew the facia panel and pull the cluster out a couple of inches you can get to the two nuts on the amp meter, all the rest pull off then the whole lot can be lifted out, all the rest pull off. Just remember to drop the steering column a couple of inches first.

Are we there yet dad ..... 10 to the gallon but worth it.
