Ignition retarding at high rpm

The Dart ran a faster 60ft with more igntion timing (thanks to GTX Jim and Adam for the advice); but it would seem that this is too much at the 330 foot and 1/4 mile points as both were down on the previous best by about 3 mph.

The MSD6 digital has the ability to retard the ignition timing by applying 12 volts to one of the input leads.

However, I am not sure on the best way to achieve this. The obvious answer is yet another manual switch, but I consider this unreliable and inconsistent.

Also it is not easy to fit a micro switch to the Fairland shifter as it is a bit "old school". I do not think fitting one on the carb is a good idea either.

Does anyone have any suggestions on either an rpm-linked device, or a timing-related device that would work with the MSD6 D set up.

I have not found anything on the MSD site as yet.

Forgot to mention - running locked out timing.

Anyway I cannot see how re-curving the ignition can make it retard, only advance at a different rate...

By my reckoning, I want 40 Degrees of initial timing, reducing to 34 - 36 degrees at high rpm.

I know its a lot but it works with a big cam, etc....

Its running on C12; don't try this at home kiddies...

The only way to tune the motor is to plug chop @ the end of run , this will tell you what the motor wants , if your changing the octane rating or heat range on plugs then this will require pulling or adding spark lead.

No reason to add or pull timing above 3000 rpm (na) , unless you wanna risk totaling the motor or runnin slower :? the motor does'nt see below 3000rpm , that's why you've locked the timing out.
If there are gains to be had by adding/pulling timing above 3000rpm on a na run then the motors not set up correctly to start with. ;) nitrous run motors have to pull timing due to increased cylinder pressures/heat & faster burn rate , to avoid detonation/preignition.

The motor wanted another 2/3* of spark lead & fattening up , i take it you leaned the motor the previous time @ the Nats due to the air quality bein poop..................did you pull the plugs after the next run @ take a look?

The MSD6 digital is a two step controller , the purple & blue wires are usually grounded to the nitrous solinoids , so when the solinoids are activated the box will pull timing to whatever is set on the soft touch. . The digi 6 box is normally used for nitrous/boosted applications or when running a trans brake , NA motors don't use the step retard facility for timing control above 28/3000 rpm , although the start retard function is useful when your running locked out timing , i like the anti theft device on em too :D


40* spark advance? maybe bleeding off too much cylinder pressure , try backing off the lash next time out. ;)

Well the spec of the set-up might have helped... :roll:

Sorry but needing less timing at a higher rpm must mean something is not right. There must be a change in mixture quality or valve timing/sealing.

Open the lash Pete , trick the motor into thinkin it's running a smaller cam , 40* seems high , closing the lash will bleed off more cylinder pressure. :shock: :shock: :D

I think this one is done, I am trying to shave 100's of a second off now; all the big gains have been made.

I read your question as "more initial timing" and not "I only have initial and that's it". ;)
