How do I know a 440 when I see one?

For what its worth, the 440 in our Sport Satellite came out of some type of van (day-camper-winnebago thing). Cant remember the exact spec or year - early 70's tho - but it was given the ok by Clive Bond of Ultimate Race Cars (remember them?) as good enough for a fairly quick street car (12sec ish).
as far as i know, there is a raised cast number on the lower flanks of the block, certainly on the starter motor side,
from what i recall, most of my cars have had a number there that has ended in 318-8, 360-8, 383-8, 400-8 and 440-8,
am i completely misguided in my belief of this ? i'll be most annoyed if so !

so do big blocks not show the cu i ??
and what is a 'core', i cant be the only one asking !
and as for engine No's, i've had a 383, a 400, and 2x440's that have not had engine numbers stamped on em at all, let alone on the pads where you say they ought to have been !!
now, are we talkin about the same number ? the 'cast' number thats on the side of the block by the starter ?
or are ya talkin about THE engine number ?
