another 8 3/4 question
I put a 383 in my aussie charger over last winter and did a few RWYB at york. I now have traction problems as the car is still fitted with the standard axle. I have an 8 3/4 out of a 1968 fury i used to own that i have now stipped down, the bearings are shot and the ratio is incorrect, and it needs narrowing. One thing i have noticed is that the pinion flange is the same uj size as the one fitted to the standard axle. Will this small uj and pinion be upto the job ? I would guess it should be ok because this size uj was used in the big fury.............................................................. Just thought i would ask before i start narrowing and ordering parts incase anyone can suggest a better route ?
Thanks in advance. Darran..

Essex Boys to the rescue! We found the limit of the small UJ (on the front though). Paul Worrow's low 11s '73 Charger with built 440 and 250hp of gas all in off the line on sticky slicks. After a few seasons it went Boom! My 11s 'Cab was wheels up on a small front UJ. If you can go the extra, buy a big UJ flange (matched spline wise to your gears of course). And a matching end for your prop as this will need shortening anyways. Peace of mind

is your standard axle an LSD one?
if so can i have ya center i'm collecting cones and side gears for a cone and side gear sculpture
well actually i'm planning a 4 spider gear version but need the 25 spline cones and side gears out of a 2 spider gear unit as the the 4 spider gear versions have 28 spline gears and cones for the 28 spline GM axles
(or i could get some axles made in aussie length with Mopar PDC and 28 spline holden/camaro axle spline.....might be easier.)
ah well if you don't want it let me know......they are a good light weight axle....same centre as used in TVR lotus carlton Marcos Monaro and aussie skyline 80s aussie ford and Holden gen111 camaro..
can get full ally coverplate and girdle for them and a mob in Melbourne make all the centre small parts in Extra Tuff.
you could build a very decent one for about £500
design is same as the cone LSD used in US 8 1/4? 3/4?... Borgwarner did both.... for Chrysler and dana spicer australia still make em

Assuming you are swapping out a 7 1/4" for the 8 3/4", you will have to shorten the prop. You could stay with the small 7260 joints if you are on street tyres. On slicks and a sticky track, they will eventually fail, it will be the weak link in your drivetrain. Be sure to fit a prop loop. If you decide to go for larger joints and a new prop, forget the larger 7290 joints as parts are hard to get, go straight to 1350 and be done with it. Hauser has all the parts in stock.

Thanks for the advise, reading the replies i would guess i dont have enough power at the moment to break the uj"s but hope fully one day i will.... (i know that sounds daft ).If i do the job right now i wont have to do it again
. The axle that im removing Dave aint a limited slip, but ya welcome to it if you wont it. Now What ratio to order
any suggestion ?
Thanks Darran.
