he is a figure head, and a bloody good one, who cares if he is a bit green, he needs good descion makers behind him and the guts to say no when they start getting all agressive and planning to invade iran
as long as he doesn't make the same mistake as Kennedy which was to investigate too closly what his own CIA were doing "J Edgar Hoover had something to do with all that).... that and having relations with a blonde with 6 toes. (hoover had something to do with that n all...)
so if he avoid the correuption and the bullets and the mad buggers in the CIA
he'll do fine

For us oldies it's shades of "JFK" again - a new start; and boy do they need it!!!
If you want a good political read, try "Stupid White Men", by the guy who made "Bowling for Columbine" - Michael Moore.
You would start to get a feel for how Bush and his buddies raped America to line their own pockets.
Time and his actions will tell if the new lad is any better.....For all our sakes I hope he is.

Pete, Stupid White Men, a good Political read!!!!!! In the words of the great Johhny Mc, 'you cannot be serious'. Michael Moore is one of the most biggoted, arrogant, narrow minded closet millionaire writers I have EVER come accross. That book is a great read if you are having a dump, but I wouldnt call it a political book. Read 'Michael Moore is a Stupid Fat White Man' for a response. Bit more intelligence to that one as they actually reasearched MM's claims (which MM foolishly had'nt done to any great extent or in some cases, at all), and came up with a rational argument instead of a biased one.
One thing that really hacks me off about the recent electio, is how everyone has been banging on about how improtaint it is historically that a black man has become President elect. What difference does it make. He is as equally capable of being as dangerous as George Bush. What IS impiortant is what is in his head, and how he uses it. If voting was all about appearances, I'd rather shag Sarah Palin than Barrack Obama ANY day of the week so she should have got the vote - but it isnt about that at all. I feel a bit worried about how the whole circus has been driven as a lot of influential organisations seem to think having a black man in the white house is more important than having a man with the right policies. If Clinton had maced Obama, it would have been all about the forst woman President, and not her policies I bet.
For the record, I think he will be a 'Tony Blair in his first term'. Fresh, full of good ideas and not in the back pocket of big corporations. I think he could be a life saver for that country in many many ways. For me, the colour of his skin was irrelevant, as it should be in every case.

exactly
however don't underestimate the race link
he has galvanised a section of the population that would otherwise have worked against (by inactivity rather than malice) any other candidtate
that can, just by the feel good factor, have a massive effect.
he's a figure head to belive in its the back room boys that will make him a success or burn him out in 6 months
20 million people turn up at work 5 minutes early cos "hey hell i feel good today"
little steps towards a happier less terrified "by the terrorists" nation
anyone wants either a alternative view of america or right good conspiracy and indeed something different to talk about down the pub should watch this
its alarmist biased and based on dubious statistics
but no more than the daily mail paints the oposite
part 1 why religion screws us over first 45 mins
part 2 the twin towers and pan am 103 errr it ws the Pakistanis and the CIA about 1 hour in
part 3 why we currently have a credit crunch last 30 mins
Zeitgeist the movie (not on general release)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 7743189197
don't belive it all
don't belive any of it
but see it and consider that some of it MAY (may may may) (notice i said may i aint no nutter) be true. nothing said here is anymore hair brained that what you read in the papers
this at one end tabloids at the other
look at the world from the middle
its a bout 2 hours i suggest 4 cans of stella and a boring wednesday night is the time to watch....don't have nightmares do park anywhere disabled toilet in the corner by the bar etc

I completely agree with you there Clivey.
One thing I would add to that though is that, although Michael Moore is at times biased and exaggerates a fair bit, there is usually a thread of truth running through what he says.
He has done a lot in the past to embarrass large corporations and actually make them change their policies in respect to the environment and bullying tactics against people who are not in a position to fight back. Insurance companies not paying out for life saving medical treatment on their poorer customers etc.
So he is not all bad and in many cases his targets don't even try taking him to court because they have no real defense for their actions. Do you think he would get away with many of his claims if the parties concerned were not frightened to take matters to court?
So they try to discredit him in other ways. Much like the way Obama has been attacked during this political campaign.

In many ways I feel sorry for Barack Obama because for one he has to pick up the pieces left by the Bush administration, secondly the media has hyped him to such a level that it's going to be virtually impossible for him to fill the boots they have made for him.
Just the task of implementing a fairly radical environmental policy, pulling troops out of Middle East and getting employers to pay for medical insurance ain't gonna be easy in a country where very nearly half the country voted for McCain.
I couldn't agree more that America needs a breath of fresh air (a first term Blair, I think Clivey said) but Obama's going to need all the luck he can get to get through this one and if he gets it wrong he could bankrupt the world's largest economy.

Pulling troops out of the Middle East is going to be extremely difficult. If the yanks think they can send over the boats, fill em up and bring them back they have another thing coming. The whole region is extremely unstable and removing the 'stabilising' force could make an already lawless place descend into chaos. It might make the inhabitants of good ole US of A happy, but the Arabs won't be happy about reneging on the promised restructuring of the Countries affected (which you need troops to achieve).
Obama should unite communities, and his new posting should also provides quite a persuasive argument that the glass roof of promotion for ethnic minorities is about to be smashed leaving those who can achieve as individuals, to do so. Thats a space I'll be watching.

Don't you believe it Pete, I have business contacts in the 'States that are doing very nicely indeed and have large, guaranteed orders in the pipeline...did someone mention Government contracts?Pete wrote:Bit late for that I fear...........Ivor wrote: ...............and if he gets it wrong he could bankrupt the world's largest economy.

Even when the whole thing turns to SH one T, there's always somebody on the top of the pile doing well out of it!
I think it makes a huge difference, Clive. At last, a huge proportion of the US population can no longer feel disenfranchised from their country, and, at last, a huge proportion of the US population can actually realise that the American dream, that anyone can be president , is actually true. You no longer need to be rich, born rich, the rich son of a rich father, the son of a bootlegger, an ex-general, etc, etc to be president.Clivey wrote:

You can be of mixed race with a foreign sounding name and become president. It is very important.
I doubt we will ever see a mixed race Prime Minister of the UK, especially when you consider the Prime Minister is only actually elected by, at most, a majority of the population in his constituency, and several hundred of his political 'peers'. Hardly democratic.
What is discouraging is that Americans will still feel, and Obama's election may just reinforce it, that the American way is the right way for the world.
They point blank fail to see that the hanging chad debacle made them a laughing stock in trying to point out that their democratic system was THE system for everyone; Abu-Graib (pardon my spelling) and Guantanamo Bay have made them a dangerous laughing stock in trying to adopt any sort of moral high ground with regard to human rights and the legitimacy of any rules of law; Iraq and Afghanistan have severely pointed out the limitations of their military 'might' and the recent economical shenanigans have undermined any right they have to harp on about the benefits of capitalism.
Apart from God loving them (apparently, and to the exclusion of every other nation on earth), they have very little going for them at the moment.
