Now heres a question??

Post by Anonymous »

last night, I got asked the question how much power am I putting out? Good question, I have no idea. How much grunt should I be expecting (or not) from my engine? For a re-cap, its a 318 stroked by .010 via an offset grind, has 340 'J' heads with 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust (polished) valves, a Comp Cams 268H cam (Duration: 268/268 @ .050": 218/218 Valve Lift: .454/.454), 600 sec vac Holley on an Edelbrock performer intake, headers of unknown make (look the same as hookers) and electronic ignition.

Any one got any rough ball park figures I should expect to see? Next year I might get it on a rolling road to see what it actually does? is my little teen gonna do me proud?

If you post the intake and exhaust opening/closing points from the cam card I can plug the numbers into desktop dyno and give you a rough figure.

I don't think you have the duration @ 50thou right. That looks more of a "advertised" duration figure.

Your right Dave sorry, that is advertised duration. Actual duration @.50 is 218. This is the info on the stick that I have.

High Energy™ Cam
These high torque cams work very well on the street. Designed for use in carbureted engines having a 9:1 CR or less. Can be used in conjunction with most stock components, including intake and exhaust manifolds, and carburetors. Normally, gas mileage will either remain the same or increase over a stock cam

That is enough for a ballpark figure. That intake is a dual plane isn't it?

I will have a look at it tonight for you. But don't expect anything dramatic. It is quite a mild build.

lol, Cheers mate, I'm not really expecting anything mega as it was built for street use more than anything. I very nearly bought a .484 cam for it and a better intake but I drive this nearly every day so I had to behave with it. I need it to do more than 20 mpg.

Really? From what I have been reading the 1970 318 motor as standard with a 2bbl produced 230horses @ 4400 and 320lbs-ft of torque @ 2000. If this is right I would expect mine to be pushing 250-260hp?

I await correctment. ;)

When you ask how much power are you putting out, you mean at the wheels ?

Kev is probably about right ... 180-190.

Plus, remember that the 1970 figures were gross, in other words, on a dyno with no exhaust system and minimal ancillaries.

Hence, your factory 230hp was probably actually 175-180, and by the time it got to the wheels, probably about 140.
