904 help please!

I've just finished installing a rebuilt 318,and an unknown 904 into my 72 Challenger.The trans I took out always flared up between 2nd and 3rd,This trans is doing the same,although not half as bad.reverse and 1st-2nd are fine.Is there a simple cure in just adjusting the brake bands,or should I send one away for a rebuild?Fluid is new,and old fluid was a nice red colour,with no burnt smell.

You can ajust the band. If you have an inch pound toque wrench tighten the band to 72 inch pounds then back off 1 1/2 turns. If you dont the books all say tighten to if fills snug and back off the same. The other thing is have if you arnt useing a manual valvue body you have got to have your kick down linkage fitted because if you havent it will kill the box

Auto boxes are a mystery to me, why does not having a kickdown kill the box? dunno if this is a stupid question or not!

Doctor B has advised the same to me.

I would imagine if you are at a driving point where the box would naturally kick down - say driving clamly up hill, it wont without the kickdown so the engine is forcing the box to drive the car in a manner it isnt comfortable with. Hell of a lot of strain there trying to push a big car up hill at 30mph in top under hard acceleration.


Now if I am right, not only will I eat my hat but I am also most probably a monkeys uncle :lol:

You know I get sick to death of telling people to hook their kickdown levers up. I must do it several times a year. Nearly all of them also complain the trans is not shifting right. Doh!

The ONLY time you run without a kickdown lever is when you use a fully manual valve body transmission.

The kickdown lever does three things.

First of all the lever controls line pressure. It gives you softer shifts at low speeds/low loads and harder shifts in high load conditions.

It also allows throttle pressure to oppose governor pressure during shifts. This is what holds the trans in gear longer under high throttle opening conditions.

It also dowshifts the trans. When the throttle is fully depressed it causes the shift valve to overcome governor pressure and causes a downshift.

The governor BTW is a device in the tailshaft that gives the trans information about road speed. It is a simple centrifugal device that increases line pressure to the valve body as it spins faster. Running without a kickdown overides it full time.

hooked up the kickdown today,and adjusted the bands,,and threw in a filter and some dextron.What a difference! no slipping,smooth upshifts,and hard downshifts at full throttle,fixed the speedo too!!! Cheers guys!
