Never even thought to mention that it does have to be automatic transmission fluid. NOT gearbox oil. You did realise that didn't you 70rtse?

Dave, sisn't 9 litres a bit much? I put in 6-7 and still had to let some out of my 727. Stock pan.

Torque converter takes a fair bit too. And you drain that when you change the oil.
I will double check on the total amount later (It was off the top of my head) unless someone does it for me first..

OK. Home now. :)

I was right in that a 727 behind a 440 has a total capacity of (according to the 1970 Challenger owners manual) 9 litres.

However. Depending on what engine you had it varies. A hemi trans only takes 8 litres. A 383 bbl is down as 7.8 litres but the 383 2bbl is the same as the 440 at 9 litres.

Go figure.

Hmm? i thought i'd overfilled mine as I had fluid leaking from the bellhousing even with about 7 litres. Dipstick certainly read high at the time, drained of a litre or so and the leak pretty much stopped. All new tranny and seals so i figured i overfilled it.

Remember that is bone dry capacities and the converter probably takes something like 2 liters. I think with my deep sump I ended up using all of the 10 liters of Titan ATF 3000 (Dexron II) I bought.

The decision to use this fluid was based on both its low price, availability from my local motor factors, and the fact it comes in 5 litre bottles.

Fuchs Titan is what I use,get it from a local digger place, same price. Better than £9 a litre from Halfrauds.
