help with garage

Post by Anonymous »

The weather here has been terrible the last couple of day, yesterday i got to the garage hoping to do a oil change spark plugs etc,to find that several of my plasterboard ceiling tiles had decided they wanted to be floor tiles, missed my car by inches thanks god but still a bloomin mess,so I've ripped them all out plus 2billion tonnes of insulation [must remember to use face mask and eye protection next time] turns out there are what look like drill holes all over the roof so i have some stuff for that BUT there is also water coming through under the door, the drain is completely useless and the water just sits there

what i wanted to ask was has anyone got any spare plasterboard or anything similar just lying around that they want rid off free would be nice obviously as i do have limited cash at the moment but am willing to by drinks at shakey/nats etc any help appreciated

p.s anyone got any ideas to stop the water coming through under the door

The first thing I would do is try and clear the drain Simon.

Event if you pop rivet a rubber flap on the bottom of the garage door, it won't keep out standing water.

A pic of the inside of the garag roof would help, because I would hav thought the last thing you want to do is try and nail plastrboard up there, but that's just my opinion, where is Mr Walton, ourresident builder? He may hav a btter idea for you...
The pump don’t work coz the vandals took the handles.

just thought plasterboard probably wouldn't be best in an unheated garage anyway would it? fiberboard????? i will have to take pictures tomorrow of the roof

thing is with the drain my garage is the last and all the water comes to me, the drain just stops and its just mud, if it were dry then fine it would just soak the water but that isn't going to happen,i have previously cleaned the drain out so there isn't anything blocking and the water is crystal clear [kind off]

Hi Simon well me old mate you may have problems with the drainage as it sounds as though you may have a soak away type drain which has become silted up through the years which would require digging out and reinstating to allow the water to drain away but if I'm wrong and this is a mains connected storm drain then it deffo needs clearing either way as this will help with your condensation problem you must also remember to allow your car to cool down so as not to introduce condensation into your garage. What if any heating are you using in your garage as if its a gas heater that puts moisture into the air as do paraffin/ diesel derived type heaters. Ceiling insulation will always be a good idea if done properly and you don't have any water ingress problems but one would assume looking at the age of your roof it will most probably be asbestos so the easiest way is just to use some external sealer from the inside (it does work) then once the water is longer coming in put the insulation back and cover over with hardboard then paint it white good reflection. Hope this helps as for the water under the door two hopes no hope and bob hope mate thinking back to what Ive wrote Simon surely the Ive is responsible for the drainage probs no you. :thumbright:

If it's a rented garage, it ain't your problem. You can get them to repair it. If you bodge it then get them round, you'll more than likely find they charge you to put straight your bodge.

unfortunately i do not have electric in the garage and therefore have no heating etc. when i turn the engine off i leave the fan on until cool ish then just leave the bonnet up until cold then close the door

the roof is asbestos but for now I'm going to plug up the holes and use some v large dust sheets [just as a temporary thing] done that with the old garage and worked very well,

as for the drainage is goes the length of the garages, then just stop and water etc is meant to soak into the ground, might try just digging up some of the ground and seeing what happens, if that doesn't work i will definitely be asking him to do something and i will have the backing of 29 other people at the end of the day there is nothing in the contract saying we are responsible for any work

Simon,
It's a no brainer surely, start moving your stuff now then. £20 a week more & you will have no leaks, electric, work area, sounds good mate.
