Flip Top Gas Caps - 72 Challenger

Post by witorque »

Our 72 Challenger came with a Flip Top Gas Cap.
I am just re assembling the tank, filler neck tube etc, and notice that the cap fitted was not remotely compatible with the filler neck, there is a rubber cup seal on the inside of the flip top cap, which is maybe an inch away from the filler neck tube when closed.... No wonder the garage always smelt of petrol.
I looked at the flip top cap on a 70 Charger, and that has a totally different spring loaded mushroom type seal that seals on the filler neck
It looks like our 72 Challenger originally had the simple straight bar bayonet fitting type, which is not listed as being available.
I looked in Y1 and Laysons catalogues, and notice that the flip top type is only listed as fitting 70 & 71 Challengers... Does that mean that earlier models had a different recess in the rear quarters, or maybe a different filler neck tube?
It would be preferable to stay with a flip top cap. What is the solution here?

my flip top uses a seperate locking cap that fits inside the filler neck with key , flip top on a challenger is more for show , charger does use it as a sealing cap :thumbright:

Thanks for the quick reply.
Where can one get a locking cap? I've no idea what it should look like.
Any chance of a photo?
I still wonder why the flip cap is only listed for 70 & 71 Challengers?

It's from my '68 Charger, but fits "IN" the tube the same.

The Challenger one is nothing like that Charger one.

There is a couple of threads on this subject on my Challenger message board with images.
